Myrtle Beach, Good. Marriott, Bad.

Ashley and I went to Myrtle Beach this week for a convention I was working.  We’ve been gone since Sunday.  Van had to stay home and work so Mom came with me to babysit while I was working.  We stayed at the Marriott Grande Dunes.  In years past, the Marriott has treated me well.  But this year, Marriott Grande Dunes gets a big thumbs DOWN!

Our room was not ready when we got there, despite having been guaranteed an early check-in at 2:00 p.m.  I had requested an early check-in so I could nurse Ashley and get her settled in the room before I had to work the convention.  So much for that.  We had to wait 2 hours for our room!  Then we had a bad experience with room service and weren’t given what was advertised on their menu.  Oh, and the crib they were supposed to set up in our room ended up being a used pack-n-play that probably hadn’t been disinfected in the past year.  Thank goodness we brought our own so Ashley didn’t have to sleep in the hotel’s germy one.  Yuck!

But even with a few hotel annoyances, our trip was a lot of fun!  Mom got some good quality time with her granddaughter, and I was able to work the convention without worrying about her.  On my time off, we went to The Market Common and did some strolling, shopping, and had lunch.  It was so hot that day!  It was a pretty place to walk around.  We also took Ashley to the kiddie pool at the hotel.  She had fun splashing around!

This was Ashley’s first hotel stay and it was quite an experience.  It was a challenge getting her to sleep at night, and she didn’t like riding in the crowded elevator.  But she loved strolling around the hotel looking at all the new people and sights.  She’s such a ham, too.  She soaks all the attention right up!  Overall, she did really good adjusting to the new environment.  It was a fun trip but we are looking forward to seeing our boys again!

Happy Birthday Blake!

Yesterday was Blake’s 4th birthday!  My little pup is growing up (sniff sniff).  This was the first year that we didn’t celebrate on his birthday.  We are celebrating today, the day after, because I forgot to order his cake!  When I called yesterday to place my order, it was too late to get it so they are making it for pick up today.  I swear I still have baby brain!  I remembered his birthday, but not the cake…humph.

We always get the boys a cake from Gourmutt’s Bakery for their birthday.  They LOVE their cakes.  Pies and cookies too for that matter!  It’s a fun place to get them something special.  And yes, the boys do have to share their cake with each other on their birthday :)

Happy Birthday Blake, aka Noodles!  You are rambunctious, lovable, and a giant cuddlebug.  Our family wouldn’t be the same without you.  We love you buddy!

First Words

Wait for it…wait for it…Da Da!!  Yep, those were her first words.  She’s been babbling a lot lately, but Tuesday night she was scooting on the floor towards the dining room, which is where Van was sitting.  She looks right up at him and clearly says “Da Da”.  It was the cutest thing ever!  No other babbles.  Just Da Da.  I was so excited, yet a little jealous.  Van was obviously elated!  It was really neat too, that she knew what that meant.  She knew Van was Da Da and she was calling for him.  Such sweetness!

She had her 9 month check-up this week and she did good.  Notice I didn’t say “great”.  She hated it actually.  She threw a fit when the nurse tried to weigh her, another fit when the nurse tried to measure her length, and she clearly voiced her opinion as the doctor examined her and gave her a shot.  Not a happy camper.  She’s growing well though.  Our little pumpkin is now 17.05 pounds, 27.25 inches long, and her head circumference is 46.25!  Yes, that is a huge head compared to the rest of her little body.  Her head is in the 96% percentile!  That’s because of her large, intelligent brain of course :)   The doctor answered all of my questions.  I really really like our doctor.  I had a bad experience with another doctor in that practice, and was thinking about switching practices.  But at her 6 month visit, this doctor had to fill in for ours who was running late, and I absolutely loved him!  So I decided to stay.  It feels nice to have a doctor you feel comfortable with, who is knowledgeable, friendly, and seems to genuinely care about your child.

Here’s a funny tidbit of what Ashley is doing now.  Well, she’s been doing it for about a month actually.  I’m just now getting around to blogging about it.  She puts her hands up in the air, and looks up at them.  Van says she is the Queen calling her subjects.  That’s exactly what it looks like.  It is so funny!  I guess she is fascinated by her hands, so she holds them high up in the air and looks at them.  Sometimes she even babbles to herself or will hold a toy high up in the air and talk to it.  Here are a few shots of her doing it with Van before we went on vacation.

Dinner with Friends

We went to Patrick and Laura’s house for dinner last night and had a great time!  The four of us have been friends for a long time.  Pre-baby and even pre-marriage!  Ashley loves her Uncle Patrick and Aunt Laura :)   We do, too!

On another note, Ashley is 9 months old today!  NINE MONTHS!  Needless to say, I am already planning her first birthday party.  I am so excited!  And she goes to the doctor tomorrow for a check-up.  Can’t wait to get her stats and see how much she has grown.  Also to get all of my questions answered.  I have yet to go to a doctor’s appointment not armed with a list of questions!

All Good Things…

…must come to an end.  Well, there you have it; our vacation is almost over :(  And what a FUN and RELAXING vacation it was!  I am sitting here sipping on a pina colada as I type this.  My Dad makes a yummy daiquiri!  We are winding down while Ashley is sleeping.  She is tuckered out.  Everything has just been so wonderful and I am sad to leave tomorrow.  We’ve had a GREAT time!

I love my family so much and it was nice to spend the week with them.  I’m a very lucky girl!  Until next time…

The Boys’ Turn

Yesterday was a VERY off day for Ashley.  Oh my goodness, was it crazy.  She wouldn’t eat (solids or milk), wouldn’t sleep, and was cranky whenever you tried to feed her or put her to sleep.  So she was up all day long.  It was insane.  I think she may have been teething.  Her top teeth haven’t come in yet so maybe they are getting ready to break through.  I don’t see anything up there but you never know.  The only thing she would eat was watermelon, and that’s because it was in her mesh feeder so she could chew on it.  It probably felt good to her.  After dinner, we got in the pool and she splashed and played for a while.  We were in the pool until almost 8:00!  Once we gave her a bath though, the day caught up to her and she fell asleep right in Grandma’s arms.  Poor little thing.  She was so tuckered out!

Meanwhile, Van and I took the boys to the beach.  Since it was getting dark, my pictures didn’t turn out very good.  But the boys had a great time!  We threw their bumper in the ocean for them to fetch.  They love jumping through the waves!  It makes me so happy to see them having fun.  I love my boys :)

On a sad note though, there is a lady here on vacation who lost her dog.  She is from Atlanta.  Her dog got spooked by fireworks and ran away.  It’s a Bernese Mountain dog.  So she has posted fliers everywhere and people have been searching for him.  Someone came up to us last night as we were walking to see if we had seen her dog.  I feel so bad for her.  Since I almost lost Blake 2 years ago in the same circumstance, I know that lump in your throat feeling.  It just breaks my heart.  I really hope her doggie  finds his way back home!

Myrtle Beach Run

We went to Myrtle Beach yesterday afternoon.  What was intended to be a short little trip to the outlets, ended up being a longer trip which put us back home pretty late.  We had so much fun though, and Ashley did wonderful!  We shopped at the Tanger Outlets.  It was Ashley’s first outlet experience and she enjoyed it.  Daddy and Grandaddy took turns pushing her around in the stroller, dodging the sun and finding the shady spots.  They also entertained her while Grandma and I did all the shopping.  We did some damage in Carter’s, The Children’s Place, and Baby Gap.  That was the first time I have been to those outlets and not shopped for myself.  We were in Ashley mode!

We then went to Calabash for a late dinner and ate at Capt. Nance’s Seafood.  It was so yummy!  I wanted to get our pictures taken out on the dock but decided to wait until after we ate.  Well, by that time it was dark out so the pictures didn’t turn out very good.  Oh well.  You can’t tell it, but there was a shrimp boat behind us in the pictures.  We ate at 8:00 p.m. and got back home around 10:00 p.m.  Ashley fell asleep on the way home.  We were all pooped!

Not Yet a Beach Fan

Some of you may think it odd that we never go to the beach, but we really don’t.  My parents have had a house here on Holden ever since I was in high school.  But it has been years since I have actually been on the beach.  I’ve walked on the beach, sure.  And I’ve taken the dogs for a swim on the beach.  But actually taking chairs out there to spend the day like all the tourists, not so much.  I’ve never really enjoyed getting all sandy.  Walking through the hot, blistering sand to get to the ocean.  Having to wipe the sand out of your eyes when your neighbor stands up and flings sand everywhere.  Cooling off in the ocean while simultaneously watching out for the sharks, stingrays, and jelly fish out there swimming with you.  Trying not to drown as the current sucks you under.  I’m more of a pool girl, where you can stay nice and clean.  And if something is swimming next to me, I’ll see it.  My parents have a nice pool here at the house and you can’t beat the view watching boats go by on the waterway.  So we normally just stay here.  But yesterday I thought it was time we make the trek to the beach for Ashley.

You know how when things go smoothly it’s not really that memorable; but the things that don’t go as planned, those are the memories that really stay with you?  Well, our beach trip was certainly a memorable one.  First off, it took forever to leave the house.  After we got Ashley fed, changed, and lathered up, we packed the truck full of umbrellas, chairs, a tent, towels, a cooler, drinks, koozies, toys, and watermelon.  We unloaded everything at the public access and unpacked on the beach.  Van carried Ashley out there and when he arrived where we were sitting, his shirt was soaking wet.  Apparently, those Huggies Swimmers aren’t worth a darn.  I didn’t know this until now because when Ashley is in the pool, she is always wet so I had no way to know that the diapers leaked.  Not only did they leak all over Van, but we also found out she had left a deposit in there.  And these aren’t regular diapers either.  They are pull-ups!  How do you get a pull up off a baby without spilling the contents everywhere?!  Well, with the help of your Mom and sister of course!

Actually, let me back up a bit.  After discovering Ashley’s wetness, I had the brilliant idea of just putting her in the ocean to clean her off.  Ha!  Seriously?  Yea, I’m an idot.  I just held her while I stood in the ocean (didn’t even put her in) and she hated it.  It didn’t help that it was rough water yesterday.  She cried.  So I tried putting her in some water that had puddled up on the sand.  She cried.  I put her feet in the sand.  She cried.  We changed her diaper.  She cried.  Tried to put her suit back on.  She cried.  So we just left her naked with a clean diaper on.  She took about a 5 minute cat nap laying on my shoulder, and when she awoke she was good to go!  It was so funny.  Like she just needed to re-charge.  So from that point on, she was fine.  She ate some watermelon in her mesh feeder, lots of watermelon actually.  Played under the tent and entertained herself for quite a while.    When she began getting tired again, we packed it all up and came back home.

Man, it was exhausting.  She hated the water.  Hated the sand.  She was content just playing on a blanket under the tent.  So I don’t think we’ll be making another trek to the beach anytime soon.  All that work for such little reward.  Some would say it wasn’t worth it.  But having this story about Ashley’s first beach experience…priceless!

Happy Birthday America

Today was a typical July 4th at the beach.  Good food (i.e. ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, key lime pie), pool, sun, beer, family and fun.  Ashley wasn’t in the mood for the pool so that didn’t last long.  Instead, we just hung outside with everyone else.  I’m exhausted.  It was sooooo hard to get her to go to bed tonight.  Luckily, Grandma provided back-up and eventually got her to sleep.  She was just so afraid she was going to miss out.  And between all the people coming in and out of the house, the fireworks (which are STILL going by the way) and the dogs barking, it wasn’t exactly the best environment for putting a baby to sleep.  I don’t know how it is in Raleigh, but down here at the beach, people think it is necessary to shoot off fireworks all during the night.  At this point, it is just annoying.  Yes they are pretty, yes I get it, but can we please move on now?  You know, some people do like to get some sleep around here.  Is that too much to ask?  Sorry for the negativity.  Maybe I’m getting older and it’s just the scrooge coming out in me.  Or maybe it’s the Mom that had a hard time getting her baby to sleep so she’s just pissed off at everyone.  I would go with the latter.

And I’m not the only one who has problems with fireworks.  Toby can’t stand them.  He barks, pants, and runs around the yard in circles. He gets all worked up.  There is no rationalizing with him.  It’s like he is in a trance, another state of mind. This year we locked Toby and Blake up in the garage under the house.  A few of you may remember the story a couple years ago when Toby was going bizerk at the fireworks so Blake thought he would “stop” the fireworks for him.  Blake proceeded to jump in the waterway, during the pitch black night, and swim up the waterway towards the fireworks.  Long story short, we barely got him back, and it was a nightmare I will never forget.  So tonight, Toby is on anti-anxiety medication and they are both locked up downstairs.

Anyways, it was a pretty chill day.  We really didn’t do much.  Perfect for a vacation huh?  Played ball with the boys, they swam, and I read a book sitting by the pool (I’m just now getting in on the Twilight craze!).  Played with Ashley and gave her some watermelon.  Van relaxed and enjoyed himself.  I don’t think I saw him open his laptop until tonight – which is a first!  And even then, it was just to download pictures.  We watched the fireworks from the waterway.  Very pretty.  And Ashley did good.  The noise didn’t bother her and she really didn’t show much of a reaction.  She was pretty indifferent to the whole thing.  Well, until you tried to put her to bed.  But overall, a wonderful holiday!

Here are some pictures from July 4th 2010…

  • About Me

My name is Niki. I’m a coffee drinking, baby food making, blogging mama to baby girl Ashley, 2 labs, and a cat. I absolutely LOVE being a Mom! I enjoy taking pictures of Ashley and making homemade baby food for her.

I like doing anything outside whether it's going to the beach, strolling around the neighborhood, or just going to a park. I enjoy blogging and reading other Mommy blogs. I’m up for learning new things and have recently become interested in photography. I like a clean house, beds made, and checking off my to-do lists.
  • The Hubby

I am married to Van, my best friend. We met in high school and have been together ever since! We practically grew up together. I feel very lucky to have found the man of my dreams so early in life. We married in 2004 and had a little girl in 2009. I can't imagine life without him. He keeps me grounded. He’s very practical, methodical, and technical. He’s a computer genius.

We like going on vacations and would love to go back to Europe one day. Van is a regular “guy’s guy” and enjoys fishing, flying and riding his motorcycle. But he is also a family man. I love him!
  • Lil’ Pumpkin

Ashley is our little bundle of joy. She was born in October 2009. Since she was a fall baby, we called her Lil’ Pumpkin while she was in the womb. Van now calls her Pumpkin Pie. I never could have imagined how much I would enjoy being a mother to this sweet little girl. I am just overwhelmed with love for her!

Ashley likes eating homemade baby food, bouncing in her exersaucer, and watching the dogs play. She is entertained by my goofiness and she loves to sing and dance with me. I've never met a baby as happy as she is. She is a reminder of what life is all about. She makes us smile and laugh every single day!
  • The Boys

Toby is our 8 year old black lab and Blake is our 3 year old chocolate lab. They are uncle and nephew. They have their own couch and some may consider them a bit spoiled. I enjoy making Frosty Paws (doggie ice cream) and baking homemade treats for them. Although I have to admit, I haven’t done much of that since Ashley was born. We celebrate their birthdays with doggie cake.

Toby is obsessed with tennis balls and Blake loves his red ball. They are the best of friends. And they both LOVE swimming. Especially in my parents’ pool at the beach!
  • Jim Jim

Jimmy is our 4 year old tabby cat. Van rescued him from the jaws of a pit bull when he was a mere 8 weeks old. I don't think Jimmy has forgotten that seeing as he is very attached to Van.

Jimmy is an indoor/outdoor cat who loves to roam the neighborhood and hunt. He likes to bring us "gifts", anything from birds and rabbits to field mice. He is a sweet cat, but I wouldn’t cross him if I were you. You don’t want to see that crazed look in his eyes!
