New York City - Day 2

We woke up early the next day so we could get on TV at The Early Show.  I watch that show religiously every morning.  I love Harry, Maggie, and most of all, Dave, the weather guy.  And I am so very sad that they are leaving.  So I was psyched to get to meet them!  We were in the audience outside.  Maggie wasn’t there, but we did get to meet Harry and Dave.  Harry shook our hand and I got a picture with Dave Price!  We were on TV for the weather broadcast and Harry did a little piece outside, too.  But unfortunately, it was snowing here at home and our idiotic local CBS station, WRAL, decided not to air The Early Show and they stayed on air to talk about the “snow problems”.  How annoying.  My first time on TV, and whatdya know, my family can’t even see it.  Go figure.

Conveniently, FAO Schwartz is right next door to where The Early Show is filmed.  So we were able to go in right when they opened at 9:00AM.  That was what I was most looking forward to on our trip…going to FAO Schwartz and playing Santa!  We spent 2 hours in there (it was AWESOME!) and got several things for Ashley.  We got her first baby doll and a giant pink dog named Penelope.  Penelope is so big that we had to have her shipped home!  I can’t wait for Ashley to see her on Christmas morning.  She is going to love it!

Then we walked around Central Park, which is beautiful, even in the dead of winter.  Saw the horse carriages, Plaza Hotel, and a neat little outdoor market.  We also saw the Trump International Hotel and Tower.

That afternoon we went to a taping of The Late Show with David Letterman.  It was so neat!  Apparently, the Ed Sullivan Theater is pretty historic.  I had requested the tickets a couple of months ago, but they didn’t call us until the weekend before we left to tell us we had won tickets.  Van had to answer a trivia question first in order to get the tickets.  Thankfully he answered it correctly :)   It was neat seeing how they tape the show.  We even went next door to the Hello Deli and Van bought some coffee from Rupert!  And when I found out that Matt Damon was the guest, I about wet my pants!  I was in the same room as MATT DAMON!!  We even waited outside to see if we could see him before he went in the side entrance, but it was so cold, we only lasted about 30 minutes before we headed into the nearest Starbucks to warm up.  While we were waiting, I did get my picture taken with Alan Kalter.  He’s the announcer on Letterman.  We caught him going in the side door and he agreed to a quick picture as he was headed in to work.

Then we had dinner at Carnegie Deli.  YUM!  We got a Bacon Whoopie (basically a giant chicken salad sandwich with bacon, lettuce and tomato).  It was so big, we just got one and split it.  And for dessert a homemade strawberry cheesecake!  Carnegie Deli definately held up to it’s reputation of great food.

After dinner, we made our way to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre to see Elf, the broadway show.  It was fabulous!  We both really enjoyed it and it put us in the Christmas spirit even more.  I left the theater singing!  The actors were great and the songs were joyful.  Overall, a very talented cast.  I had high expectations for this show seeing as how I love the movie Elf so much.  And it didn’t disappoint!  It was also neat because it is playing for only 9 weeks.  So I feel like we got to see a special show.

As you can see, Day 2 was packed full of NYC fun!  Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.  Day 3 to be continued…
